Huddersfield to Ukraine

The Rotary Club of Hebden Bridge is pleased to award a grant of £1,100 to Huddersfield to Ukraine Humanitarian Aid to support their next delivery of vital supplies to communities in eastern Ukraine. This small, volunteer‑led group, based locally, collects, sorts, washes and packs donated goods for transport to areas where the need remains acute.

Working with trusted partners on the ground, Huddersfield to Ukraine ensures that aid reaches families, hospitals, a women’s safe house and a sanatorium caring for around fifty displaced children from toddler age to sixteen. The group aims to send at least four consignments a year, accompanied as usual by Tim, a committed Rotarian who flies out to meet the vehicle at the border and personally oversees distribution despite the ongoing dangers. This direct oversight, reinforced by regular updates on their Facebook page, helps to ensure that nothing is diverted into warehouses or the black market and that support goes straight to those in greatest need.

The next consignment will include cold‑weather essentials for people now facing sub‑zero temperatures, many of whom are living in basements after losing their homes and possessions, often with little or no electricity.

  • Power packs.

  • Head torches, particularly to help children cope with long hours in the dark.Huddersfield-to-Ukraine-Summary.docx

  • Hand and foot warmers to provide immediate, portable heat for people sheltering in unheated spaces.Huddersfield-to-Ukraine-Summary.docx

  • Thermal socks for children, women and men, with quantities and sizes carefully planned to match needs.Huddersfield-to-Ukraine-Summary.docx

All items have been sourced to maximise value, and where possible the group plans to buy rechargeable head torches and similar equipment to extend the useful life of the aid and provide a more sustainable benefit.

Why this support matters

At present, Huddersfield to Ukraine has no other dedicated funding for this particular consignment and relies on income from selling items on Vinted and from fundraising stalls, which also help to cover the £5,000–£6,000 transport costs for each truck.  Contributions and donations translate directly into practical warmth, light and comfort for some of the most vulnerable families, older people and displaced children in eastern Ukraine.

By backing this project, our Club is reinforcing a strong message of solidarity and compassion from Calderdale to communities still living with the daily realities of war. We are grateful to Huddersfield to Ukraine Humanitarian Aid and to all the volunteers involved for their tireless efforts to turn local generosity into life‑saving support on the ground.
