Rotary funds cricket nets for Old Town village hub

We have awarded a £400 grant to Old Town Cricket Club to support the installation of new cricket nets at its village ground, part of a project funded jointly by Rotary and the club’s own fundraising.

Old Town Cricket Club is a long‑standing village sports and community hub, providing facilities not only for cricket but also for local Women’s Institute meetings, camera club sessions, yoga and Pilates classes. The pavilion and ground are also used for school sports days and children’s parties, with plans in place to introduce a women’s rounders team and armchair yoga sessions next year, further widening community use.

The funded project focuses on installing a cricket net to reduce the risk of cricket balls flying out of the ground and potentially causing damage to neighbouring properties. By containing practice and match play more effectively, the nets will help maintain good relations with local residents while still allowing players to train properly and enjoy the game.

Club members will provide the labour for the installation themselves, demonstrating strong volunteer commitment and keeping costs down, while the Rotary grant will go towards purchasing the posts and netting. The remaining funding is being raised by club members, underlining the shared effort between the club and its supporters to improve facilities.

The project is expected to be completed by 30 March 2026, in time for the new cricket season. Rotary Club of Hebden Bridge is pleased to support a club that not only promotes grassroots sport but also offers a valued, multi‑use space for a wide range of local groups and activities at the heart of the Old Town community.
